VEA Lobby Day 2023

Nancy Bassett, RCEA President, and Amy Harris, RCEA Treasurer, attended the VEA Lobby Day on January 16, 2023 in Richmond, VA. The day began with a Rally at the Bell Tower at 9:00am, where we met with other attendees from around the state and heard many speakers, including Delegate Barker, Delegate Locke and Delegate Maldonado. VEA President Dr. James J. Fedderman led the rally.

After the rally, Nancy and Amy went to visit and speak with the Delegates and Senators from their areas concerning education bills coming up in the Delegate Assembly this year. They met with Delegate Tony Wilt, Delegate John Avoli and Senator Emmet Hanger. Delegate Avoli has a bill he is sponsoring to get more ELL teachers into school buildings. To find out more about what will be happening in the Delegate Assembly this year and the bills that the VEA supports and opposes go to https://strongschoolsva.org/resources/.

This is also the time of year we are looking for anyone interested in becoming an RCEA Officer. The offices include President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.

The Vice President helps the President and also attends School Board meetings. They may also help with the Scholarship Committee in choosing winners and may attend the VEA Convention.

The Secretary is in charge of keeping minutes of the member meetings and sending out messages to members of upcoming events.

The Treasurer is in charge of handling membership forms, creating the yearly budget and keeping up the Treasurers Notebook, which involves keeping up with  the checkbook, banking statements and paying dues to the local UniServ and VEA. Education Support Professionals

How much do you know about the Educational Support Professionals (ESPs) in your building? What part do they play in student education? Watch the attached video about what it would be like in a day without them. Connect with the ESPs at your school to thank them for what they do every day; and, let them know they can also be a member of the RCEA/VEA/NEA. Invite them to join or to learn more about the education association!
